Shubman Gill sat out Gujarat Titans’ fielding innings during their high-octane clash against Rajasthan Royals on Monday after suffering a back spasm. His absence came at a crucial time, as 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi produced a record-shattering performance that lit up the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
Gill led from the front with the bat, scoring a sublime 84 off 50 deliveries and powering Gujarat Titans to a formidable total of 209/4. However, when the team took the field to defend the target, Gill did not appear, and vice-captain Rashid Khan assumed the leadership role on the field.
Speaking after the match, Gill confirmed the reason behind his absence. “I felt a slight spasm in my back during my innings. The physio advised rest as we have a game in two days. We didn’t want to take any chances,” he explained.
While Gujarat Titans dealt with the sudden change in leadership, Suryavanshi stole the spotlight with a fearless display of batting. The Rajasthan Royals opener took the Gujarat bowlers to task, hammering a blistering 101 off just 38 balls. His incredible knock included eight fours and 11 sixes, making him the youngest player to score a century in IPL history. The fireworks from Suryavanshi helped Rajasthan chase down the daunting target of 210 with 25 balls to spare.
Suryavanshi’s rapid-fire century was a statement of intent, as he attacked the likes of Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Siraj, and even dispatched Rashid Khan and Washington Sundar over the boundary. The young batter’s audacity and aggression left Gujarat’s bowlers with little to do.
Despite his own injury, Gill was quick to praise the youngster’s remarkable innings. “It was his day. His hitting was just tremendous, and he made full use of his day,” said Gill in his post-match interview. Suryavanshi’s performance was instrumental in Rajasthan Royals securing an eight-wicket win, their third victory in IPL 2025.
Gujarat Titans will now look to regroup. They need to focus on their next match against SunRisers Hyderabad at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Gill remains optimistic about his team’s chances, stating, “It doesn’t matter for us what happened in the previous match. We take one game at a time, and we have had a good run in Ahmedabad, so hopefully, we can continue that.”
