Harshal Patel: Above Average Season, But Striving to be an Economy Ace Like Jasprit Bumrah

Punjab Kings (PBKS) fast bowler Harshal Patel has termed his current IPL season as “above average” despite acknowledging areas for improvement. Patel, currently the second-highest wicket-taker in the league, aspires to emulate Mumbai IndiansJasprit Bumrah’s exceptional economy rate.

Wicket-Taking Prowess, Room for Economy Improvement

With 17 wickets in 11 matches at an average of 21.29, Patel has been a vital cog in the PBKS bowling attack. However, he recognises the need to tighten his control over run flow. His current economy rate of 9.78 places him behind Bumrah, who boasts an impressive sub-six economy.

“There are areas where I could’ve done better,” Patel told ESPNCricinfo ahead of their clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). “While the number of wickets and the impact they’ve had are positive, focusing solely on numbers might not be the best approach this season.”

Unlocking Consistent Wicket-Taking and Economy Balance

Patel highlighted his comfort level in taking wickets, particularly with his slower deliveries. However, containing runs consistently remains a challenge.

“My strength lies in picking up wickets, and that’s what I’ve been working on refining,” he explained. “The key is setting up those slower balls effectively and executing them at crucial junctures to force errors. While wickets haven’t been a problem, containing runs is an aspect I’m actively working on.”

Aiming for Bumrah-like Economy

Patel revealed his admiration for Bumrah’s ability to restrict runs irrespective of the situation. “Jasprit is a constant source of inspiration, especially considering his exceptional economy. Throughout the IPL, he’s been the only fast bowler conceding less than six runs an over most of the time,” Patel said. “That’s the benchmark I challenge myself to reach.”

Patel weighed in on the recent comments by Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins regarding a sub-10 economy rate being a success metric for bowlers. Patel argues that such benchmarks need to be viewed in context, especially considering the high-scoring nature of IPL 2024.

“Judging bowlers solely based on economy needs context,” Patel explained. “Expecting a bowler to concede just 24 runs in four overs – two each in the powerplay and death – is unrealistic. Given the high run rates this season, especially in the powerplay and death overs, an economy of nine to ten with a couple of wickets can be considered a brilliant spell. The goal is to restrict the opposition by 10-15 runs, not necessarily bowling four overs for minimal runs.”

Patel’s self-awareness and focus on improvement bode well for his future as a bowler. His ability to combine wicket-taking prowess with greater economy could make him a truly match-winning force for both Punjab Kings and India.
