Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disappointment at not being invited to join Allan Border during the presentation ceremony of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Australia clinched the series 3-1 after defeating India by six wickets at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday.
Australia Secures Historic Series Win
Australia finally laid their hands on the coveted Border-Gavaskar Trophy after an emphatic 3-1 series win. The victory at the SCG marked the end of a ten-year drought for the Aussies, who hadn’t won the title since 2017. Pat Cummins led his side to victory as they chased down a 162-run target with ease on Day 3 of the final Test.
However, while Allan Border was invited to hand over the trophy to Cummins, Sunil Gavaskar was left completing media duties away from the stage.
Gavaskar Wanted to Be Part of the Presentation
Speaking to Code Sports, Gavaskar expressed his disappointment. “I certainly would have loved to have been there for the presentation. After all, it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and it is about Australia and India,” he said.
The former Indian captain clarified that the outcome of the series didn’t influence his desire to be part of the moment. “They played better cricket, so they won. That’s fine. Just because I am an Indian doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be there. I would have been happy to present the trophy with my good friend Allan Border.”
A Special Bond with Allan Border
Gavaskar and Border share a long-standing friendship, one that dates back to the MCC Bicentennial celebrations in 1987. During those matches, both legends played for the Rest of the World team against the MCC.
“I am very fond of AB (Border),” Gavaskar shared in a previous interview with the Indian Express. “We really bonded during that tour, traveling and playing matches together. It was a wonderful experience.”
The cricketing icon also expressed his pride in having the series named after him and Border. “I feel honored, privileged, and blessed that the series between India and Australia is named after us. Such an iconic series—it’s a blessing.”
Australia’s Comeback After Early Setback
Australia’s series win was comprehensive, but it didn’t come without its challenges. India took a strong start by winning the first Test in Perth. However, the hosts roared back with a commanding 10-wicket victory in Adelaide’s pink-ball Test.
The third Test at the Gabba was disrupted by rain, ending in a draw. But Australia grabbed the crucial moments in Melbourne, sealing a series lead before finishing things off in Sydney.
