It is with great sadness that we report the passing of former India cricketer Salim Durani on Sunday morning. He was 88 years old at the time of his death and had been suffering from age-related ailments.
Durani had been residing in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with his brother Jahangir. Earlier this year, he had undergone proximal femoral nail surgery after breaking his thigh bone in a fall. Despite undergoing the surgery, his health continued to deteriorate, ultimately leading to his demise.
Salim Durani was a stylish and dynamic Indian cricketer of the 1960s, born in Kabul in 1934. He was known for his six-hitting prowess and had a successful international career spanning over a decade. He played 29 Tests for India and was a member of the historic India side that won the five-Test series against England in 1961-62.
Durani’s impressive performance in Tests included taking 75 wickets with his left-arm spin bowling, and his best bowling figures of 10 for 177. He was also a capable batsman and scored 1202 runs in his Test career, with his highest score being 104 against West Indies in 1962.
Durani was widely admired for his all-around abilities as a cricketer and played a crucial role in India’s victories during his career. His contributions to Indian cricket earned him a place in the pantheon of Indian cricketing greats, and he remained a beloved figure in the cricketing community even after his retirement. His legacy as a dynamic and gifted cricketer will continue to inspire generations of cricket fans and players.
Salim Durani was a celebrated Indian legend and his loss poured in Condolences from not just the cricketing world, but from people all across the globe. The Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi also expressed his grief. “Salim Durani Ji was a cricketing legend, an institution in himself. He made a key contribution to India’s rise in the world of cricket. On and off the field, he was known for his style. Pained by his demise. Condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in peace,” Prime Minister Modi tweeted.
Other prominent personalities including Sachin Tendulkar, Ravi Shastri, VVS Laxman, and Harsha Bhogle also took to Twitter to express their condolences.
