Punjab Kings have made significant changes to their coaching staff, parting ways with head coach Trevor Bayliss and head of cricket development Sanjay Bangar. The decision comes as part of a larger effort to revamp the franchise after disappointing performances in recent seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Punjab finished eighth in 2023 and ninth in IPL 2024.
The franchise board, which includes the four co-owners, made the decision to part ways with both Bayliss and Bangar. This move follows the recent appointment of former Australian captain Ricky Ponting as the new head coach of Punjab Kings. Ponting, who signed a four-year contract covering IPL 2025 to 2028, has made it clear that he intends to transform the team’s culture and raise its competitive standards.

Multiple coaches for Punjab
Bayliss had joined Punjab Kings as head coach after IPL 2022, succeeding former India captain Anil Kumble, who held the position from 2020 to 2022. Bangar, who initially served as head coach of Kings from 2014 to 2016, rejoined the team in December 2023 as the head of cricket development.
Ponting’s appointment is a key part of Punjab’s efforts to change their fortunes. In an interview, Ponting emphasized that he wants to create a more dynamic and successful environment at Punjab Kings, stating, “We are not going to sit back and just accept mediocrity.”
Punjab Kings have struggled to find consistency in leadership, with multiple coaching changes over the past decade. With Ponting at the helm, the franchise is hoping for a fresh start and better results in IPL 2025.
