After the major success of the biopics of MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar, another movie based on the career of Indian cricketer has been announced. India’s former captain Kapil Dev’s life will be shown on the silver screen and his character will be played by the Bollywood superstar Ranveer Singh.

Kapil – an inspiration

It will be indeed a movie to watch out for as Kapil Dev has been a stalwart of Indian cricket. He inspired a generation of youngsters to take up cricket as a career.

In 1983, cricket wasn’t as popular in the country as it is now. The Indian team went into the World Cup with the tag of being the underdogs. No one really expected them to do well.

But against all odds, the Kapil Dev-led side reached the final to face the mighty West Indies who had won the previous 2 World Cups. India scored a paltry 183 batting first which seemed like a walk in the park for the Caribbean giants.

But a bunch of youngsters stunned the world and lifted the prestigious trophy at the Mecca of cricket – the Lord’s. Kapil took the decisive catch of Sir Vivian Richards that turned the game in India’s favor. That triumph turned out to be the turning point for cricket in India.

Kapil Dev is one of the best all-rounders to have graced the game of cricket. He played 131 Tests for India in which he scored 5248 runs and bagged 434 wickets. In 225 ODIs, the legend amassed 3783 runs and accounted for 253 wickets.
