Rajasthan Royals are not having the best of a season so far. They have won only 2 games. Moreover, their captain, Sanju Samson, is out due to injury. Stand in captain Riyan Parag was mocked by Sunil Gavaskar in the game against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Parag dropped a catch of Phil Salt, who went on to score 25 more runs.
Riyan Parag was entrusted with the responsibility of captaining the Rajasthan Royals side this season. In the first three games, Sanju Samson could only play as an Impact Player due to an injury. That’s when Parag got his captaincy gig. Later in the season, Samson was injured again. Parag has since then been the captain of the side. It is uncertain when Samson will make a comeback in the league.
As the captain of the side, Parag’s performance has not been up to the mark. Last year, Parag was the mainstay of RR’s batting. The batter from Assam scored 573 runs. With 4 half-centuries. However, it has been a different case this year.
In the 8 matches played by Parag this season, he has amassed only 212 runs. RR’s position in the bottom half of the table has a lot to do with the batter’s faltering performance. He has been envisioned as the pillar of the team.
On the second ball of the second over, Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled a low full toss outside off. Salt chipped the drive, but hit it off the toe of the bat. It went to Parag at mid-off. He dived forward to take the catch and even held it for a brief moment. However, as he tumbled after, the ball popped out.
In the commentary box, Sunil Gavaskar took a jibe at Parag and asked whether the pressure of captaincy is affecting his fielding too. He said, “Riyan Parag is not having the best of seasons. Is the captaincy affecting his fielding? We’ve seen captaincy affect batting and blowing but in his case, it is also fielding.”
