Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has heaped praise on Sanju Samson for his fearless approach with the bat. With Team India gearing up for the white-ball series against England starting January 22, Samson’s form has become a hot topic of discussion.
Samson, who was a part of India’s victorious T20 World Cup squad, has been making waves since his promotion to the top order. The wicketkeeper-batter has smashed three centuries in his last five T20I outings, catching everyone’s attention ahead of India’s final international assignment before the Champions Trophy 2025.
Manjrekar Sees Growth in Samson’s Batting
Speaking on Star Sports, Manjrekar highlighted the changes he’s noticed in Samson’s game.
“Self-confidence, slight maturity, and he is valuing his wicket a little more. He is playing long innings and not just one but repeatedly. Some people blossom a little late and Sanju Samson is like that,” Manjrekar said.
The former India batter, who has often been critical of players, admitted he’s now a big fan of Samson.
“It seemed earlier that he was batting well but where were the runs? Now the batting is anyway mighty, even the runs are there,” he added.
Samson’s Case for Champions Trophy 2025
Earlier, Manjrekar had backed Samson over Rishabh Pant as India’s second-choice wicketkeeper for the upcoming Champions Trophy. The tournament, scheduled to start on February 19, will see India take on Bangladesh in their opening match on February 20.
Samson’s recent form with the bat has strengthened his chances of being part of that squad. His ability to play fearless cricket while also anchoring innings has impressed the selectors.
The much-anticipated Champions Trophy 2025 will be hosted in Pakistan and Dubai. India’s matches, due to political reasons, will take place in Dubai. However, the final venue depends on India’s performance. If India makes it to the final, Dubai will host the marquee clash. Otherwise, the grand finale will take place in Pakistan.
