Mitchell Starc, the Australian fast bowler for Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2025, made headlines after his match-winning performance in a thrilling Super Over against Rajasthan Royals (RR). However, it was his comments on the use of saliva in cricket that grabbed attention during the post-match interview.
The use of saliva on the cricket ball became controversial during the COVID-19 pandemic. The ICC banned it, but the rule has since been lifted. Starc made it clear that he does not believe in the effectiveness of saliva, particularly for white-ball cricket. He said, “I don’t use it. I think it’s a myth. Some people swear by it. I don’t know the difference between sweat and saliva. I don’t think it makes a difference. It can on the red ball, but not on the white ball.”
These comments came after Mohammed Shami expressed concerns about reverse swing and supported the saliva rule’s return. Starc, however, disagreed. He believes sweat is just as effective, if not more so, in modern cricket.
Starc’s bowling performance against Rajasthan Royals was stellar. In the final over of the regular innings, Rajasthan needed nine runs off six balls. Starc conceded only eight, forcing a Super Over. In the Super Over, he gave away just 11 runs. DC chased the target in only four balls, winning in dramatic fashion.
With this win, DC now sits second in the IPL 2025 points table. The team has five victories so far. Starc’s efforts have been crucial to their success, especially in high-pressure moments.
After the thrilling win, Delhi Capitals face Gujarat Titans on April 19, 2025, at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Titans have been solid this season, making it a challenging match for DC. However, with Starc in top form, DC will aim to extend their winning streak and climb to the top of the table.
