Zimbabwe defeated Bangladesh in the first Test of 2-Test match series. The spirited performance from the young Zimbabwean side won the hearts of fans worldwide. They won the match by 3 wickets in a closely contested and rain-affected match.

First Test win in 4 years

Zimbabwe recorded their first win in Test cricket in 4 years. The last match they won was in March 2021. It came against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi, where they chased down a target of 17 runs.

After a long wait, the African side has conjured up a win and a moment for their fans to rejoice. They defeated Bangladesh in Sylhet by 3 wickets. It was also the first Test win for Craig Ervine as the skipper of the side.

Spirited performance from Zimbabwe

The match in Sylhet was affected by rain. Rain interruptions and bad light plagued the game throughout. However, that did not hinder the quality of cricket played. At the start of the fourth day of the Test match, Bangladesh hoped to set a target in excess of 300 to dominate the visitors.

Zimbabwe, on the other hand, wished to restrict the hosts as cheaply as possible. As it turned out, the visitors were closer to their goal. Blessing Muzarabani’s 6-wicket haul in the third innings meant that Bangladesh were bowled out for 255. Having gained a sizeable lead in the first innings, it meant that they had a target of less than 200 in front of them. The chase was on.

A thrilling chase

Chasing a target of 174, Zimbabwe started off in a strong fashion. The opening partnership between Brian Bennett and Ben Curran lasted 95 runs. However, Bangladesh made inroads after the first wicket. Zimbabwe were reduced to 161 for 7. However, Wesley Madgevere and Richard Ngarava ensured that they lost no more wickets and reached the target.

However, Zimbabwe’s win came on the back of their performance on day 1, where they bowled out for 191. The visitors went on to gain a lead of 82 by scoring 273 runs.
