Australia Tour of India 2025 Schedule

India National cricket team vs Australia national cricket team Timeline

The India vs Australia cricket rivalry isn't new; it has been there ever since the two nations faced each other for the first time in 1947. However, after the 2023 World Cup Final, it reached new heights. India's home loss to the Aussies at the 2023 World Cup final ignited a rivalry that has resulted in epic on-field encounters. What added salt to the wound was Australia ceasing India's dream of winning their maiden World Test Championship Title earlier that year. Since then, every cricket match between these two teams feels like a fierce battle.

India vs Australia: When did it all start?

The India vs Australia rivalry started way back in 1947, right after India’s independence. India toured Australia at the back end of 1947. This was the first overseas tour of the Indian team post-independence era. However, the results were rather disappointing for the Indian team. They lost the 5-match series 4-0 and returned home empty-handed.  It took India more than a decade to win their first Test against India. India first won a Test against Australia during a home Test series in 1959-60. The second Test at Kanpur saw India beat Australia by 119 runs. Jasubhai Patel was the hero of the game, who absolutely dismantled Australia with his bowling. He took 9 wickets in the first innings and followed it by another 5 wicket haul in the second innings. As of now, the India vs Australia test rivalry is known as the Border Gavaskar Trophy.  The ODI story is however a little different. Even though ODIs were introduced in 1971, it took about a decade for the India vs Australia rivalry to ignite. India first played Australia during the Benson & Hedges World Series Cup in 1980. It was a tri-series comprising India, Australia and New Zealand played in Australia.  Under the leadership of legendary Sunil Gavaskar, India won their first ODI game against Australia by 66 runs. Sandeep Patil emerged as India’s hero as he managed to score 64 runs and even picked up a wicket. However, it was the solo win India managed to register on that tour.

India vs Australia in the 21st Century

The 21st century between India vs Australia started with a memorable moment. Australia travelled to India for a 3-match Test series in 2001. Having won the first Test convincingly, Australia looked confident of putting India to the ground in the second as well. As India were forced to follow on, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid stood their ground. The duo batted all day long and took India’s total to 657/7 (declared) in the second innings as India managed to win the game by 171 runs, thanks to Harbhajan Singh’s bowling antics.  Over time, the India vs Australia rivalry has not only seen cricketing battles, but a lot more than that. There have been incidents of verbal onslaughts as well as alleged cases where the spirit of the game has been lost. The famous ‘monkeygate’ scandal is a prime example of that. During the 2020-21 Border Gavaskar Trophy, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj had alleged Australian fans of hurling racial slurs at them.  Moreover, on the last few tours, there have been incidents of players being physically apprehensive with each other. Recently, Virat Kohli was criticized for brushing off the shoulder of Australia’s teenage sensation Sam Konstas. Nonetheless, emotions run rampant whenever the two giants collide.  In the last 5 years, Australia and India have had a much more intense rivalry than ever. India’s defeat at the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 and the World Test Championship Final 2023 have only acted as fuel to the fire. However, India have also fought back by defeating Australia at the ICC T20 World Cup 2021, 2022, and 2024.
