Cricket fever gripped Delhi as Virat Kohli returned to Ranji Trophy action after 12 years. The Arun Jaitley Stadium witnessed an overwhelming crowd on Thursday, January 30, as Delhi took on Railways. Fans turned up in huge numbers, chanting Kohli’s name and even shouting “RCB, RCB” in excitement.
However, the excitement turned into chaos when a fan breached security and ran onto the field to meet the Indian batting maestro. The devoted supporter touched Kohli’s feet before security could intervene.
The dramatic moment unfolded during Railways’ innings when a fan, evading multiple security layers, dashed onto the field. Kohli was stationed in the slip cordon. He was caught by surprise as the fan bowed down and touched his feet. Security guards quickly grabbed the intruder and escorted him off the ground.
Kohli’s reaction stood out. Instead of anger, he remained calm and even signalled to security personnel not to handle the fan roughly.

Virat Kohli’s presence in the Ranji Trophy match was a special occasion. The Indian batting maestro last played in the tournament in 2012. His return to domestic cricket after 12 years drew massive crowds to the stadium.
The Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) allowed free entry, expecting around 10,000 spectators. However, the turnout far exceeded expectations, reflecting Kohli’s unmatched fan following. The line to enter exceeded two kilometres.
The pushing and shoving resulted in at least three people sustaining injuries, with one requiring a bandage on his leg. A security guard also got hurt during the commotion. In the chaos, a police bike was damaged near the stadium gates.
Kohli last played a Ranji Trophy match in 2012 against Uttar Pradesh in Ghaziabad. In that match, he scored 14 and 43 runs, but Delhi lost by six wickets.
Now, at 36, Kohli is back in domestic cricket. This will likely be his only Ranji Trophy appearance this season. Following this, he shifts focus to India’s upcoming ODI series against England.
