West Indies opener Brandon King got the T20 World Cup Super Eight off to a fiery start with a colossal 101-meter six that literally left the stadium in St. Lucia. King’s audacious shot-making put England on the back foot early on in the crucial encounter.
Sent in to bat first, the West Indies innings began cautiously, reaching a modest 13/0 after two overs. King, who is known for his aggressive batting style, struggled to find his timing initially. He attempted to hit each of the first three balls of the third over bowled by England’s Reece Topley but couldn’t connect cleanly, prompting him to switch bats.
This proved to be a turning point. With his new weapon in hand, King faced the third ball of the same over and dispatched it with brutal nonchalance. Topley’s delivery, a full toss on middle and leg stump, was met with a powerful flick by King. The ball sailed majestically over the deep mid-wicket stands and completely out of the stadium, leaving the England fielder with nothing but a wry smile. The sheer distance of the hit forced another change of ball.

While the six signalled King’s intentions, his stay at the crease was short-lived. He managed just 13 more runs before retiring hurt due to an undisclosed issue. Despite the early exit, his knock of 23 runs from just 13 balls provided the Windies with a vital early impetus.
Riding the momentum from King’s explosive start, the West Indies batsmen continued to put pressure on the English bowlers. Captain Rovman Powell took the mantle after King’s departure, smashing a rapid-fire 36 runs off just 17 deliveries. This quickfire knock from Powell, coupled with valuable contributions from other batsmen, propelled the Windies to a strong total of 180/4 by the end of their innings.
While the West Indies batting display was impressive, the England bowlers clawed their way back into the contest during the latter stages of the innings. The spin trio of Adil Rashid, Moeen Ali, and Liam Livingstone shared three wickets between them, restricting the Windies’ scoring rate in the death overs.
This match between West Indies and England promises to be a thriller, with both teams showcasing their firepower. Whether the Windies can defend their total or whether England can chase it down remains to be seen.
