The stellar partnership of Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni, two luminaries of Indian cricket, has etched several significant cricketing triumphs for the nation. Despite their on-field camaraderie, Yuvraj Singh recently shed light on their personal relationship, dispelling the notion of being “close friends.”
In a candid conversation on TRS Clips, Yuvraj Singh acknowledged that his association with MS Dhoni extended primarily due to their shared endeavour of representing India in cricket. He highlighted that beyond cricket, their personal trajectories and lifestyles were distinct.
Yuvraj stated, “Me and Mahi are not close friends. We were friends because of cricket, we played together. Mahi’s lifestyle was very different from me, so we were never close friends, we were only friends because of cricket.”
The former cricket star delineated their professional rapport, underscoring that their responsibilities as captain and vice-captain led to inevitable decision differences. Yuvraj mentioned that such divergences are commonplace within any team.
Yuvraj further elaborated, “Sometimes he made decisions I didn’t like, sometimes I made decisions he didn’t like. That happens in every team.”
Yuvraj Singh emphasized that in the realm of sports, personal friendships don’t necessarily have to flourish outside the field. He emphasized that each player brings their unique skill set and lifestyle, and not all teammates need to be best friends.
He elaborated, “Your teammates don’t have to be your best friends outside the field. Everybody has a different lifestyle, skill set.”
Moments of Mutual Support
To illustrate the depth of their professional bond, Yuvraj Singh recounted various instances when their dedication to the team eclipsed personal considerations. Be it as a runner for MS Dhoni or giving him the strike for a century, their on-field dedication was unwavering.
“In the World Cup final (2011), it was decided if Gauti (Gautam Gambhir) gets out, I’ll go, if Virat gets out, Dhoni goes. That thing is more important than friendship,” Yuvraj reminisced.
In conclusion, Yuvraj Singh expressed his well wishes for MS Dhoni in his retirement and highlighted that their interactions are warm and friendly when they meet, devoid of any lingering grudges. He emphasized their shared professional ethos during their cricketing tenure and their deep respect for each other.
Yuvraj shared, “He is retired, I am retired. When we meet, we meet like friends only not like ‘I don’t want to get to know you’. We shot an ad together too, and had fun talking about our past days.”
