Australia captain Alyssa Healy has been ruled out of the first T20I at the Sydney Cricket Ground due to foot soreness. Her participation in the remainder of the Ashes series is also uncertain. Healy, who had recovered from a plantar fascia injury earlier, is now being managed in a protective boot.

In Healy’s absence, Tahlia McGrath is expected to lead Australia in the T20 Opener. Australia aim to take an 8-0 lead and retain the Women’s Ashes. Beth Mooney will take over wicketkeeping duties. However, Grace Harris or uncapped Georgia Voll could fill the vacant top-order spot.

Injury Woes Continue for Healy

Cricket Australia confirmed that Healy’s latest issue stems from mid-foot soreness on the same side as her previous plantar fascia injury.

“Alyssa has developed mid-foot soreness on the same side as her previous plantar fascia injury following the ODI series. She is currently being managed in a boot and will not be available for this evening’s game. Cricket Australia’s medical team is consulting with specialists to develop an appropriate management plan over the coming days. Her availability for the remainder of the series will be assessed as more information becomes available.”, read a statement from Cricket Australia.

Alyssa Healy has continued to struggle with injuries ever since the T20 World Cup last year. She missed Australia’s series against India due to a knee issue. Furthermore, she played as a specialist batter during the ODIs against New Zealand in December.

A Tight Schedule Ahead for Australia

Australia’s schedule for the T20I series is demanding, with games in Canberra on January 23 and Adelaide on January 25. Even if Healy returns for the remainder of the series, it is unlikely she will keep wickets for Australia.

The injury has also delayed the announcement of Australia’s squad for the day-night Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
