The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will begin on March 21 and conclude on May 25. The announcement was made by BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla during an exclusive conversation with Sports Tak. The dates come as a slight revision from the previously proposed start of March 14.
IPL to Kick Off Right After Champions Trophy 2025
The upcoming season of IPL will follow immediately after the ICC Champions Trophy, which runs from February 19 to March 9. The tight scheduling highlights the packed calendar for Indian cricket, with back-to-back marquee events.
The IPL 2025 opener will be held at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, with the rest of the schedule expected to be released soon.
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), led by a new captain, will enter the new season as defending champions. KKR claimed the title last year by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a thrilling final.
Fans will be eager to see how teams shape up after the recent IPL 2025 mega auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Several high-profile transfers took place during the auction, with significant changes in team compositions.
One of the most talked-about changes is Rishabh Pant’s move to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The former Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper joined LSG, while KL Rahul, who captained LSG last season, was picked by DC.
These swaps have added an intriguing layer to the upcoming season. Fans will be keen to see how these players adjust to their new teams.
Future IPL Seasons Also Announced
The BCCI has also revealed the tentative dates for the next two IPL seasons:
- IPL 2026: March 15 to May 31
- IPL 2027: March 14 to May 30
These announcements provide a clear roadmap for the league’s future, ensuring teams can plan ahead.
Apart from the scheduling updates, the BCCI has appointed a new IPL commissioner for a one-year term. The identity of the new commissioner is yet to be disclosed, but their role will be critical in ensuring the smooth running of the league.
The next BCCI meeting, scheduled for January 18-19, will focus on finalizing India’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2025 and reviewing plans for the upcoming IPL season.
