Luck has not been on Karun Nair’s side for years. One of the only two Indian batters to score a triple hundred in Tests, he has not been in national consideration for years now. However, in his comeback match in IPL, the batter has shown what he is capable of.
Karun Nair was being overlooked not only for the national side but also in the IPL. The 33-year-old batter last played in the tournament in 2022. He played for the Rajasthan Royals at the time. Nair makes a comeback after waiting on the fence for 3 years. As if living a dream, he has made one of the strongest possible comebacks.
The DC batter did not take much time to get going. He stuck back-to-back boundaries to Trent Boult early on. He hit another boundary in the same over to stamp his authority. He went on to take Deepak Chahar to the cleaners as well. Nair hit Chahar for two beautiful fours. However, Nair came to his own when dealing with the best bowler of the generation, Jasprit Bumrah.
Karun Nair completely asserted his dominance over the Mumbai bowling attack by taking Bumrah to the stands. He scored 26 runs off 9 balls to Bumrah. It is the second-most runs scored against Bumrah by an Indian player in an IPL match. Only Shikhar Dhawan scored more (27). However, Dhawan took 16 deliveries for it.
Nair hit Bumrah for 3 fours and 2 sixes. The batter showed no sign of fear against the lethal bowling of Bumrah. Even Hardik Pandya, the MI captain, applauded Nair as he hit Bumrah for a massive six over deep backward square leg.
Nair went on to score an impressive 89 off just 40 balls. He hit 12 fours and 5 sixes. He played with a strike rate of 222.5. Eventually, he was dismissed by Mitchell Santner, as he missed out on a well-deserved century.
