In a match between Gulshan Cricket Club and Shinepukur Cricket Club in the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, a strange incident of stumping took place. Batter Minhajul Abedin tried to charge against spinner Naeem Islam but seemed to deliberately give up his wicket when he missed the ball.
In the last crucial moments of the game between Shinepukur Cricket Club and Gulshan Cricket Club, an unusual stumping took place. The batter in question stepped out to offspinner Naeem Islam, but he missed the ball. Wicketkeeper Alif Hasan fumbled to break the stumps in the first attempt.
Minhajul Abedin seemed to have sufficient time to return to his crease. However, he did not make an attempt to do so and even pulled his bat back to keep himself outside the crease. Wicketkeeper Alif Hasan broke the stumps in the second attempt, and the batter was dismissed.
The third umpire reviewed the incident immediately. The replays showed that Minhajul left the ball despite seeing it go wide of off-stump. The wicketkeeper tried to whip the bails off for the stumping, but he missed. The batter just hovered his bat in the air without grounding it. He even pulled it back to allow the stumps to be broken, as he was dismissed in the second attempt.
The incident happened at a strange point in time. This has caused outrage too. Shinepukur were batting for survival in the tournament after having scored just 2 points in 9 matches. Tjey needed just 6 runs in 7 overs to beat Gulshan. The latter were placed ahead with 11 points. However, Minjahul was dismissed, and that ended Shinepukur’s chase. They fell short by just 5 runs.
On-air commentator Mazhar Uddin Omi expressed astonishment, saying, “This is shocking. I have never seen anything like this before.
Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM), the BCB body organising the league, said that the anti-corruption body has been informed and they are waiting for the report from the umpires.
“We saw the footage. It was the last dismissal of the day. This sort of thing is usually the match referee’s responsibility,” CCDM’s league coordinator, Sabbir Ahmed said. “We are aware of the TV umpire sitting next to him also, so they must have studied the footage. They are supposed to give a report on the incident. The CCDM contacted the BCB’s anti-corruption unit, about whether they are taking a step or not. We have been told that the ACU is working on it.”
