Amit Mishra Predicts Leadership Shake-Up: Lucknow Super Giants to Seek New Captain Beyond KL Rahul

Veteran India spinner Amit Mishra has expressed confidence that the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will look for a better captain than KL Rahul for the next IPL season. Mishra’s comments follow a disappointing campaign for LSG in IPL 2024, where the team finished seventh on the points table and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Disappointing Season for LSG

Despite being tied on points with the fourth-placed Royal Challengers Bangalore, LSG’s inferior net run rate meant they missed out on a playoff spot. The team’s inconsistent performances, coupled with back-to-back heavy defeats against Kolkata Knight Riders and SunRisers Hyderabad, raised questions about Rahul’s leadership abilities.

Mishra’s Critique of Rahul’s Captaincy

Amit Mishra, who played for LSG in IPL 2024, did not hold back in his assessment of Rahul’s captaincy. In an interaction with Subhankar Mishra, Amit Mishra highlighted the need for a captain with a better understanding of T20 cricket.

“It does not matter if he is in the Indian team or not. But a person who has the right mentality for T20s should be the captain. Someone who plays for the team should be captain. I am sure LSG will look for a better captain,” Mishra said.

The Incident with Sanjiv Goenka

The season’s low point came when LSG co-owner Sanjiv Goenka was seen having an animated on-field chat with Rahul after a dismal performance against SunRisers Hyderabad. LSG posted a modest total of 165 runs, which SRH chased down without losing a wicket.

“Goenka was disappointed. We lost two back-to-back matches very badly. Against KKR, we lost by some 90-100 runs, and against SRH, the match was finished within 10 overs. It felt like we were bowling them during a net practice session,” Mishra explained.

Despite the controversy, Rahul is set to lead the Indian ODI side in the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, as reported by India Today. With Rohit Sharma expected to be rested for the three-match series, Rahul will have an opportunity to prove his leadership skills on the international stage.
