The crowd at Chepauk and the millions of CSK fans tuning in to watch CSK play against KKR on Friday were shell-shocked. Dhoni was given out LBW to a ball by Sunil Narine by on-field umpire Chris Gaffaney. The decision was reviewed, but the on-field decision stayed.
Facing a ball from KKR spinner Sunil Narine, Dhoni tried to play a front-foot defence. The ball was at stumps, and it went close to the bat. The on-field umpire Chris Gaffaney gave it out. Dhoni decided to review.
The replays showed the ball being close to the bat when there was a slight spike on Ultraedge. Fans expected the third umpire to reverse the on-field decision. However, third umpire Vinod Seshan stood by the on-field decision.
As per the third umpire, there was a gap between the bat and the pad. Thus, he went on to Hawk Eye, which showed the ball hitting the stumps, with both pitching and the impact in line.
Former South Africa cricketer Mark Boucher was on air at the time of the incident. He was surprised by the decision as well. Boucher thought the third umpire would rule in favour of Dhoni. However, after a discussion with the broadcasters, Boucher explained why the third umpire gave it out.
“I was told that the third umpires have different parameters. What we see on the screen is just the flicker but the umpires take a look at a number of factors like the nature of the spike, how big is it or for how long and they do all of those tests before the match. So the third umpire actually knows how to differentiate between flickers,” Boucher said.
Also, the split-screen view of the ball went against Dhoni. It indicated that there was a small gap between the bat and the pad.
Meanwhile, the match was a disaster for the home side. CSK scored 103/9 in 20 overs. It was their lowest total in Chennai. In reply, KKR sailed through and chased down the target in 10.1 overs with 8 wickets in hand.
