Delhi Capitals suffered a major blow ahead of their IPL 2025 clash against Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, as senior batter Faf du Plessis missed out the important clash. The South African star was expected to open the innings, but his absence paved the way for KL Rahul to step into the top-order role once again.
Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel confirmed the news after winning the toss and electing to bowl first. Speaking about the decision, Axar said, “We’ll bowl first. We’re chasing well, and it’s the first match over here this season so don’t know how the pitch will play. Don’t trust numbers from the past too much. The challenge is to follow the plan properly and to be brave even if you get hit for a six. Faf is injured.”
Faf, who has been a key part of Delhi’s batting setup this season, expressed disappointment but assured that he is working on his recovery. The nature of his injury, however, was not disclosed by the team management.
With Faf out, Delhi turned to KL Rahul to partner Jake Fraser-McGurk at the top. Rahul has been in fine form, scoring a match-winning 97* against RCB and a quick 77 against CSK. His adaptability and experience made him the natural choice to step into the opener’s role again.
Rahul’s performances at the top have brought much-needed solidity to Delhi’s batting. His ability to rotate the strike and accelerate when required has allowed others like Tristan Stubbs and Ashutosh Sharma to play with more freedom in the middle overs.
Delhi will hope that KL Rahul continues his purple patch at the top as they aim to secure two vital points against Mumbai.
