In a groundbreaking move, veteran Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik is set to become the first Indian player to participate in the SA20 league. ESPNcricinfo has learned that Karthik will join the Paarl Royals as an overseas player for the upcoming season, which kicks off on January 9.
Karthik’s entry into the SA20 marks a significant milestone in his illustrious career. The 39-year-old announced his retirement from Indian cricket in June, coinciding with his birthday. Despite stepping away from international cricket, Karthik continues to be a prominent figure in the T20 circuit, thanks to his extensive experience and sharp cricketing acumen.
A Decorated Career
Dinesh Karthik’s career spans over two decades, during which he has played 180 internationals for India. He has been a part of 401 T20 matches globally, showcasing his versatility and skill in the shortest format of the game. In the IPL, Karthik has been a key player for six different franchises, including a stint as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). His most recent IPL appearance was with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 2024 season. Following his retirement, RCB signed him as a mentor-cum-batting coach, leveraging his deep knowledge of the game.
Pathway to SA20
The BCCI’s regulations only allow retired Indian cricketers to participate in overseas T20 leagues. This policy has opened doors for players like Karthik to extend their careers internationally. Last year, Ambati Rayudu played for St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the CPL, while Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan featured in the ILT20 for Dubai Capitals. Suresh Raina also made headlines two years ago when he joined Deccan Gladiators in the Abu Dhabi T10.
Paarl Royals’ New Addition
Paarl Royals, part of the SA20 league, recently announced their squad retentions for the new season. Captain David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, and Andile Phehlukwayo are among the key players retained. With the inclusion of Dinesh Karthik, the Royals have bolstered their lineup with a player known for his strategic mind and finishing prowess.
The Paarl Royals made it to the Qualifiers in the previous SA20 edition but faced a string of defeats, including a significant loss in the Eliminator against Joburg Super Kings. The addition of Karthik is expected to strengthen their bid for the title this season.
