Tom Curran has officially made the switch from Sydney Sixers to Melbourne Stars, signing a two-year deal ahead of the upcoming KFC BBL|14 season. The English allrounder’s decision to leave the Sixers, where he had a tumultuous last season, was primarily driven by the enticing offer from the Stars rather than any fallout from his previous team.
Leaving the Sixers Behind
After a six-year association with the Sixers, Curran’s departure was marked by a series of challenges, including a four-match suspension for intimidating an umpire and a knee injury that sidelined him for the finals. Despite these setbacks, Curran believes he left the club on good terms. “When the Stars asked if I was keen to come … I didn’t get the same from the Sixers, and it felt like an amazing opportunity,” Curran shared in a recent interview.
The Stars’ offer of a multi-year contract was a significant factor in his decision, as each BBL club can only contract one overseas player pre-draft each season. Curran’s move follows in the footsteps of compatriot Sam Billings, who also signed a multi-year deal with Sydney Thunder.
A New Chapter with the Stars
Curran’s excitement about joining the Stars is palpable. He expressed his eagerness to work alongside renowned coach Peter Moores, who took over after David Hussey stepped down. “I’ve just heard amazing things about him; he’s a really good guy, great man manager, and a knowledgeable cricket coach,” Curran remarked, highlighting the positive feedback he received from friends who have worked with Moores.
His recent performances in The Hundred, where he took six wickets in his last two matches for Oval Invincibles, have only added to his confidence. Curran’s recovery from a broken arm, which required surgery and a plate insertion, has not hindered his performance. “It feels fine and I’m bowling really nicely. It’s getting better day-by-day,” he stated.
Anticipating the Competition
With the Stars finishing sixth last season and failing to qualify for the finals for the fourth consecutive year, Curran’s arrival is seen as a crucial addition to strengthen the squad. He aims to leverage his experience in Australia to help the Stars achieve their goals. “First and foremost, you want to come in as an overseas player and have an impact to help win games,” he said.
Curran’s familiarity with the Stars, having played against them frequently, will aid in his transition. He looks forward to playing at the MCG, which he considers a tremendous honor. “I feel like I haven’t fully explored Melbourne, and I’m just really excited to be immersed in that culture,” he added.
As Curran prepares for the upcoming BBL season, he acknowledges the competitive nature of the league and the significance of his new role. “It’s an exciting new start for me. I feel like I’ve got some good years ahead of me and I’m really excited by this next challenge and chapter,” he concluded.
