New Zealand’s stand-in captain, Lockie Ferguson, has acknowledged the significant challenge his team faces when playing against Bangladesh in their home conditions. Ahead of the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh, Ferguson highlighted the responsibility that pace bowler Trent Boult will bear in the absence of key players like Tim Southee and Matt Henry.

Trent Boult, who had been involved in various T20 franchise commitments worldwide, made a remarkable return to ODI cricket with eight wickets in two games against England, including a five-wicket haul. With Southee sidelined due to a fractured thumb and Matt Henry rested, Boult’s experience and composure under pressure will be crucial.

Ferguson commented, “Clearly a guy with a lot of experience (Boult) and certainly really enjoying him back within the group. Straightaway in England, he came in and he was exceptional. It was challenging to bowl quick. The scores were high in England, and his expertise and calmness under pressure was irreplaceable.”

While recognizing the rotation policy adopted in modern-day cricket due to the high workload, Ferguson emphasized the importance of this series as part of their World Cup preparations.

Ferguson stated, “Look, we’re professionals and we take every game as it comes. This is a big series for us and a very challenging one. So, from our point of view, it’s good build-up for a World Cup; but at the same time, you know, we’re very much focused on this series.”

The New Zealand team anticipates a demanding series against Bangladesh, who are formidable opponents in their home conditions. Ferguson, who is leading the team in the absence of regular captains, expressed his privilege at captaining his country, especially as a fast bowler. He emphasized the need for adaptability in subcontinental conditions and the potential for pacers to make an impact despite the different challenges posed by these pitches.

The series against Bangladesh provides a valuable opportunity for New Zealand to fine-tune their skills and build momentum for the upcoming World Cup. Despite potential squad changes, the team is eager to face the challenges posed by the Bangladeshi team in their own backyard.
