Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has heaped praise on Sanju Samson for his outstanding performances in T20Is over the past year. After years of inconsistency and limited chances, Samson made a strong comeback, becoming a key player in India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad and delivering match-winning knocks in bilateral series against Bangladesh and South Africa.
Speaking to Star Sports, Bangar highlighted how Samson’s run of games has finally allowed him to showcase his potential.
Samson Gets His Moment
Bangar emphasized that consistent opportunities have been crucial for Samson’s recent success.
“Glad to see the kind of success he has been blessed with currently. He has been there for a long time. It’s just that he has got the right opportunities and a good run of opportunities because every batter, if he is playing three or four matches in a row, that frees him a little bit,” Bangar said.
Samson, who has often batted lower in the order in his early career, thrived after being promoted to open the innings. He smashed centuries against both Bangladesh and South Africa, making his case stronger for regular inclusion.
Six-Hitting Prowess Draws Yuvraj Comparison
Bangar also drew a parallel between Samson and legendary all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, especially when it comes to six-hitting ability.
“Batting up the order, he doesn’t really have to worry about the situation. The field is up and he is a six-hitter. He can hit sixes with ease. After Yuvraj Singh, if there is one batter who can do it with such ease on a consistent basis, it has to be Sanju Samson. So just to see him firing on all cylinders is a treat to watch,” Bangar observed.
Samson Set for India Return
Samson is likely to be part of India’s limited-overs squad for the upcoming series against England. The series will be India’s first white-ball assignment since October last year, and Samson is expected to play a crucial role.
With KL Rahul set to be rested, Samson could also get a call-up in the ODI squad. His last appearance in an ODI came against South Africa in December 2023. With the Champions Trophy scheduled for February, Samson will be keen to make the most of his chances in the three-match ODI series.
