Harbhajan Singh Advocates for India’s Bowling Strength in Asia Cup Super 4 Match Against Pakistan

As India gears up for a highly anticipated Super 4 stage clash against arch-rivals Pakistan in the 2023 Asia Cup, former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has voiced his opinion on the team’s composition. Harbhajan believes that India should prioritize a formidable bowling lineup for the crucial match and has advocated for the inclusion of pace ace Mohammed Shami. He emphasizes that the primary responsibility for run-scoring should rest with the batters, allowing India to strengthen its bowling attack.

Shardul Thakur, known for his all-round abilities, has been a key figure in India’s ODI lineup. Despite a modest performance in the opening match against Pakistan, where he scored just three runs and didn’t get a chance to bowl due to rain, Shardul’s versatility makes him a preferred choice for team management.

Harbhajan’s Call for a Pace-Heavy Bowling Attack

Harbhajan Singh is of the opinion that India would benefit from an all-out pace attack against Pakistan. He asserts that experience, like that of Mohammed Shami, should not be sidelined. Harbhajan suggests that Shami should be included in the playing XI, even ahead of Mohammed Siraj. His argument is centered on the idea that India’s batters should focus on scoring runs, and the bowlers should shoulder the responsibility of defending the total.

Harbhajan explains, “You can’t buy experience, and an experienced player like Shami sitting out, it doesn’t sit right with me. Shami should play before Siraj. If you really want to play Siraj, don’t expect batting from Shardul Thakur. You have batters till no.7, then have proper bowlers. Tell your batters to score runs, and even if we score 260, it’s the bowlers’ responsibility to defend the total.”

He adds, “Many people say Shardul can bat and ball, I agree. But we can’t go into a game half-heartedly. Can Siraj do what Shardul does? If he can do better, strengthen the bowling and tell your batters to score.”

Potential Returns: KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah

The upcoming India-Pakistan fixture might witness the return of star batter KL Rahul to the Indian playing XI after a six-month absence. Rahul had last featured for India during the ODI series against Australia but had been sidelined due to a hamstring injury during the Indian Premier League.

In addition to Rahul’s potential return, fast-bowling sensation Jasprit Bumrah is set to rejoin the XI. Bumrah missed the game against Nepal to attend the birth of his child but is expected to make a significant contribution in the upcoming match.
