England’s newly-appointed white-ball captain Harry Brook has made headlines by reaffirming his unwavering commitment to national duties, even at the cost of missing lucrative IPL opportunities. The young batting sensation, who opted out of IPL 2025 despite being signed by Delhi Capitals for INR 6.25 crore, stated he is ready to face the consequences — including a potential two-year IPL ban — as long as it means contributing consistently to England’s success.

Brook chooses country over franchise riches

Harry Brook has once again prioritized England over franchise cricket, making it the second consecutive IPL season he has withdrawn from. Though such withdrawals could trigger a two-year IPL ban under BCCI‘s regulations, Brook remains unbothered, saying he’s at peace with the decision.

“That’s the rules, so if I do get banned, fair play. I’m completely committed to playing cricket for England. If that means franchise [cricket] takes a step back for a little while, so be it,” Brook told Cricbuzz.

A leader focused on culture and clarity

With leadership responsibilities now in his hands, Brook emphasized building a relaxed and positive team environment. He underlined the importance of keeping perspective and enjoying the honor of playing for England.

“I’m going to be myself, as much as I possibly can be. Be relaxed, be calm, try to have a lot of fun and enjoy it. If you’re playing cricket for England, we’re all living that dream,” he said.

Backed by senior voices

Brook’s decision has received strong support from England’s senior cricketers. Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid both backed the BCCI’s stance while also defending Brook’s right to prioritize country over league commitments, calling it a mature and respectful decision.

Stokes and Bairstow still in the mix

Speaking on England’s senior stars, Brook acknowledged that Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow remain key to England’s plans, despite concerns over their availability and form.

“With the schedule, [Stokes] is not going to be available all the time. But he’s one of the best players in the world and we’d be stupid to turn a blind eye to him,” Brook said.
“(Bairstow) can put the best bowlers under pressure and score big runs. There’s no reason why he can’t get selected again.”

England’s upcoming assignments

England are preparing for a busy summer, starting with a one-off Test against Zimbabwe on May 22. A white-ball series against West Indies will follow, comprising three ODIs and three T20Is, giving Brook an immediate opportunity to make his mark as captain.
