“I understood the way” Steve Smith Understands His Exclusion from Australia’s Squad in the T20 World Cup

In the history of Australian cricket, a player like Steve Smith is rare. While representing the nation, Smith is one of the best threats to the opponents. But in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024, the Aussie batter was snubbed from the squad. Steve Smith acknowledged the reasoning for his exclusion, as Australia chose to include more power hitters in the squad.

Smith on His Snub:

Before the T20 World Cup 2024, Australia announced their squad without having Steve Smith in the team. In this edition of the tournament, Australia played well in the group stage but exited the Super Eight stage. As his T20I stats are not that impressive, Australia opted for more power-hitters as they can push the team to their determined target.

While talking about the snub, Steve Smith said, “In terms of international T20s, I don’t know what’s going on there. They’ve obviously got some people they want to bring in, and that’s fine.”

Later he added, “I understood the way that they wanted to stack up for the World Cup, with all the strong guys that smack it miles. I understood that. I’m not that fussed. I’ll just go about my business, keep trying to improve and get better.”

On His IPL Return:

In the recently ended edition of the Major League Cricket, Steve Smith was in excellent form. He led the team from the front and won the title for his franchise. He ended the tournament by scoring 336 runs. Steve Smith has not played in the IPL since 2021 and was not bought in the last two auctions. After having a good season in MLC, he is hoping to be back in the IPL arena.

While talking about this, he said, “I’d certainly love another opportunity at IPL. I’ll be throwing my name in the hat, and we’ll see how we go. I feel like in every opportunity I’ve had in T20 cricket recently and franchise stuff, I’ve played quite nicely. So hopefully I just keep putting my name up there and enjoying it.”
