Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma has confirmed his participation in Mumbai’s upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Jammu & Kashmir. The game, scheduled from January 23 to 26 at the Wankhede Stadium, will mark Rohit’s return to domestic red-ball cricket after nearly a decade. His last Ranji Trophy appearance was in November 2015, also at Wankhede, against Uttar Pradesh.
The announcement came during the press conference to reveal India’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2025. When asked about his involvement in the domestic game, Rohit responded, “Yes, I will play.”
Despite questions about whether a red-ball match is ideal preparation for a white-ball tournament, Rohit dismissed concerns. “It’s nothing new for me,” he said. “I’ve been switching formats for years. Playing different formats requires constant adjustment, and I’m used to it.”
Rohit has already joined Mumbai’s squad and was seen training at Wankhede Stadium alongside players like Ajinkya Rahane. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will announce the final team lineup on January 20.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has urged centrally contracted players to participate in domestic cricket when free. Rohit’s decision aligns with this directive, as do commitments from players like Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who have made themselves available for their state teams.
While Rohit and Jaiswal will play for Mumbai, the availability of other Champions Trophy squad members remains uncertain. Ravindra Jadeja has yet to confirm if he will play for Saurashtra against Delhi, while reports suggest Virat Kohli and KL Rahul will skip their respective state matches due to minor injuries.
Rohit highlighted the challenges of balancing international commitments and domestic cricket. “In the last 6-7 years, we’ve hardly had 45 days at home without cricket,” he explained. “For players who aren’t in all formats, domestic cricket is a good opportunity. But when you play regularly, you also need time to refresh.”
The match against Jammu & Kashmir will be crucial for Mumbai, and Rohit’s presence adds a significant boost to the team. Left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is also expected to play.
