Praveen Jayawickrama Faces ICC Charges for Anti-Corruption Violations

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially charged Sri Lanka spinner Praveen Jayawickrama with serious breaches of its anti-corruption code. The 25-year-old cricketer faces allegations related to three separate incidents, which include both international matches and the 2021 season of the Lanka Premier League (LPL).

Details of the Charges

Jayawickrama’s charges stem from violations of the ICC’s anti-corruption regulations, specifically:

  • Article 2.4.4: Failing to report to the Anti-Corruption Unit without unnecessary delay about an approach he received to engage in fixing future international matches.
  • Article 2.4.4: Failing to report an approach he received to influence another player on behalf of a corrupter during the 2021 Lanka Premier League.
  • Article 2.4.7: Obstructing the investigation by deleting messages that contained details of the approaches and offers related to corrupt conduct.

As part of the process, Jayawickrama has 14 days from August 6 to respond to these charges, with the deadline set for August 20. The ICC has the authority to take action regarding his charges related to the LPL alongside those concerning international matches.

Jayawickrama’s International Career

Since making his international debut in May 2021, Jayawickrama has played five matches in each format of the game for Sri Lanka. His last appearance for the national team was in a T20I against Australia in June 2022. Notably, he was part of Sri Lanka’s squad that won the Asia Cup in 2022, although he did not feature in any matches during the tournament.

Jayawickrama’s career began with a Test match against Bangladesh in April 2021, and he has since accumulated a total of 15 appearances for Sri Lanka, including five Tests, five ODIs, and five T20Is. He also played a role in the Jaffna Kings’ title-winning campaign in the LPL 2021, where he took two wickets in one match.

With the ICC taking a strong stance against corruption, the outcome of this case will be pivotal not only for Jayawickrama but also for the broader cricketing community. As the investigation unfolds, fans and stakeholders will be eager to see how the ICC addresses these serious allegations and what steps will be taken to uphold the sport’s reputation.
