Jasprit Bumrah became the first Indian pacer to win ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the year. Bumrah was phenomenal in 2024 and ended up with brilliant performance in every match he played for India.
Bumrah showed his brilliance at home and away to claim this award. Before Bumrah, Rahul Dravid, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Virat Kohli were among the Indian cricketers to receive this award. He delivered throughout the year. Moreover, when India had a heartbreaking Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah ended up with 32 wickets in Australia. He kept breaking and making records. No wonder the Indian speedster defeated England’s Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis in the competition.

Bumrah took a total of 71 Test wickets in 2024 at an average of 14.92 and a strike rate of just 30.1. Gun Atkinson of England is the second place with 52 wickets in 11 matches. He bowled 357 overs in the Test cricket for India proving why he is the main man. He also became only the fourth Indian bowler, after Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, and Kapil Dev, to claim more than 70 Test wickets in a single calendar year.
Bumrah started the year by taking eight wickets across two innings in Cape Town where India defeated the hosts. In England he scalped 19 wickets in 5-match Test series that India won 4-1. By the time 2024 ended, Bumrah was at his peak. His 32 wickets helped him grab the Player of the Series award in a tournament where Indians were hammered by Australia. Bumrah has to lead the side as well in absence of Rohit and the captain led from the front with performance.
In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Bumrah also became just the 12th Indian bowler to have crossed the 200 Test wickets mark. He also became the only bowler in Test history with a minimum of 200 dismissals to have an average of less than 20 (19.4).
