KCA President Speaks Out on Sanju Samson’s Champions Trophy Snub

As India announced the Champions Trophy squad, Sanju Samson’s name was nowhere to be found. Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) President Jayesh George has now addressed the matter. He mentioned that Samson’s absence from the Vijay Hazare Trophy may have cost the wicketkeeper batter his place in the Indian team.

KCA’s Stand on Samson

Samson, who has been a key player for Kerala, reportedly missed the preparatory camp for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which raised eyebrows. George revealed that Samson informed the KCA about his unavailability through a one-line text message.

“We all thought Samson would lead the team, especially after captaining in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy,” George said. “But then he informed us he couldn’t attend the camp. Later, he sent a message saying he was available for selection. We have a policy in place, and every player must respect it.”

The KCA president also stressed the importance of commitment to domestic teams. “Sanju doesn’t need a camp to prove himself, but can he just show up when he feels like it? He made it to the Indian team through KCA’s platform. That doesn’t mean he can take the Kerala team for granted,” he added.

Samson’s absence from the Vijay Hazare Trophy might have influenced the selectors’ decision, especially with India’s current wicketkeeping options being KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant. Despite his T20I brilliance, Samson’s lack of participation in domestic tournaments has drawn criticism from various quarters.

BCCI Announces Champions Trophy Squad

India’s Champions Trophy squad boasts a strong lineup, with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Arshdeep Singh forming a formidable pace attack. Yashasvi Jaiswal earned his maiden ODI call-up. However, Karun Nair missed out despite having a dream Vijay Hazare Trophy run.

Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar acknowledged the difficulty of fitting everyone into the squad. “We discussed Karun’s performances, but finding a spot in this team is challenging right now,” he said.
