A month before the T20 World Cup semifinals, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed a new Indian squad for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe, showcasing a shift towards a younger team by excluding established players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The Shubman Gill-led squad will play five T20Is starting July 6, with the entire T20 World Cup squad being rested. Some members of the World Cup-winning team will join the squad for the final two T20Is.
Ishan Kishan, who was once the first-choice wicketkeeper for India in T20Is, has notably been left out of the squad. Kishan last played for India in November 2023 and had been crucial in the lead-up to the 2024 T20 World Cup, especially with uncertainties surrounding Rishabh Pant’s return. Kishan, a versatile left-handed batsman, managed to score back-to-back fifties against Australia at home but subsequently fell down the pecking order, with Jitesh Sharma taking over as the preferred keeper.
In January 2024, Ishan Kishan took a break for mental health reasons and did not return to international cricket thereafter. Despite BCCI’s repeated requests for him to participate in Jharkhand’s Ranji Trophy matches, he opted to train with Mumbai Indians’ captain Hardik Pandya in Baroda instead. This decision displeased the board and contributed to his exclusion from the T20 World Cup squad and now the Zimbabwe tour.
In the lead-up to the Zimbabwe tour, the BCCI made several changes to the squad. Initially, Shivam Dube replaced an injured Nitish Kumar Reddy but was later dropped when selectors made broader changes. The revised squad included Sai Sudharsan, Jitesh Sharma, and Harshit Rana as replacements for Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, and Yashasvi Jaiswal for the first two T20Is. The T20 World Cup-winning trio will join the squad for the final two matches of the series.
Besides Ishan Kishan, several other notable players have been left out of the squad:
The exclusion of these players suggests a strategic shift by the BCCI towards a younger and less experienced squad for the Zimbabwe tour. This move might be aimed at building a robust team for the future by providing opportunities to emerging players like Dhruv Jurel, who made an impressive Test debut earlier this year, and Jitesh Sharma, who has become the preferred wicketkeeper in recent months.
Ishan Kishan’s omission from the squad raises questions about his future in the Indian T20I setup, especially considering his past performances and the recent emergence of other wicketkeepers. As India prepares for the Zimbabwe series with a fresh squad, it will be interesting to see how these changes impact the team’s performance and the individual careers of the players involved.
