Mumbai Indians (MI), one of the most successful franchises in IPL history with five titles, enters IPL 2025 aiming to break their four-year trophy drought. After a disappointing performance in IPL 2024, where they finished last in the standings, MI is looking to rebuild and bounce back stronger. With a mix of experienced stars and promising youngsters, MI will need to overcome several challenges if they are to reclaim their throne as the champions of IPL.
On paper, MI’s batting unit is arguably one of the most explosive in the IPL. With big hitters like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and the young Tilak Varma, MI possesses depth and firepower.
These top-order batsmen are capable of accelerating the scoring and putting pressure on opponents, making MI’s batting highly versatile and dangerous. The addition of Ryan Rickleton and Will Jacks further strengthens their batting department, ensuring the team can adapt to any match situation.
MI has a well-rounded bowling attack, with experienced pacers like Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Deepak Chahar leading the charge. With Bumrah being one of the best death bowlers in the world, the team can expect to restrict the opposition in the final overs.
The signing of Mitchell Santner adds a reliable spinner to the mix, strengthening their spin department, which has historically been a weakness for MI.
Injuries could once again be a major setback for MI, especially concerning their ace bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, who has struggled with fitness issues. Bumrah’s absence for an extended period could severely affect MI’s bowling attack.
Deepak Chahar is another injury-prone player, and with no other proven Indian pacer in the squad, MI may find it difficult to fill the gap in Bumrah’s absence.
MI’s spin bowling department could face problems, as the team doesn’t have a consistent match-winner. Although Mitchell Santner is an excellent finger-spinner, MI’s backup options, such as Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Karn Sharma, do not have impressive IPL records.
This could hurt their ability to contain runs or take wickets during the middle overs, which has been a consistent struggle for MI in past seasons.
With the return of Trent Boult, MI has a strong fast-bowling contingent to complement Jasprit Bumrah. Additionally, the signing of Mitchell Santner brings stability to their spin attack, which has been inconsistent in previous seasons.
If all players stay fit, MI can rely on a versatile and balanced attack, which could give them an edge in different conditions. This also reduces their dependence on Bumrah, unlike in previous seasons.
With young players like Tilak Varma, Ryan Rickleton, and Will Jacks, MI has an opportunity to nurture new talent that can provide the much-needed stability in their line-up.
These players can step up and help fill the gaps left by older players or underperforming stars, giving MI greater depth and flexibility. Their emergence could also lead to the creation of a balanced, long-term future for the franchise.
MI has struggled with internal dynamics in recent years, especially after Hardik Pandya’s appointment as captain. The presence of senior players like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, who have their leadership roles in the national team, may create tension if the team faces a prolonged losing streak. The dressing room’s mood and overall team cohesion could affect their performance on the field.
It will be important for MI to maintain a healthy team environment to avoid any internal conflicts that could impact their game.
Rohit Sharma’s IPL form over the last few years has been a concern. Despite his success as the Indian captain in limited-overs formats, he has not had a standout IPL season in nearly a decade. The Indian opener has failed to cross 450 runs in the past several seasons, and his consistency in the IPL has waned.
If Rohit’s poor form continues, MI could struggle, as he plays a key role at the top of the order. MI will need him to regain his form to challenge for the IPL title.
Mumbai Indians, with their core of experienced stars and promising young talent, will aim to return to the top in IPL 2025.
However, addressing the injury concerns, managing the dressing room dynamics, and finding a dependable spin bowler will be crucial for their success. If these challenges can be overcome, Mumbai could add a sixth IPL title to their illustrious history.
