By returning to captaincy role in the IPL MS Dhoni recorded yet another unique feat to his name. Dhoni became the oldest captain in the history of Indian Premier League as he went for the toss against KKR.

Dhoni joins elite list

Chennai Super Kings are taking on Kolkata Knight Riders at the MS Chidambaram Stadium today in Chennai. Dhoni is back as CSK captain once again for the rest of the IPL 2025. In the process, he became the oldest captain in the history of the league at the age of 42 years and 278 days. He had set a record for himself two years ago when he captained the side at the age of 41 years and 325 days.

Dhoni joined an elite list after achieving this feat in his career. Shane Warne led Rajasthan Royals at the age of 41 years and 249 days. Adam Gilchrist led Punjab Kings at the age of 41 years and 185 days. Rahul Dravid captained Rajasthan Royals at the age of 40 years and 133 days whereas Sourav Ganguly led Pune Warriors at the age of 39 years and 316 days. Faf du Plessis was the skipper of Royal Challengers Bangalore at the age of 39 years and 314 days.

However, Dhoni’s situation is not same as others. Dhoni was named captain o the franchise in the middle of the season after regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was ruled out of the league due to injury.

Dhoni’s stunning captaincy records

Dhoni last captained Chennai in the final of IPL 2023. Chennai Super Kings claimed their fifth title after beating Gujarat Titans. Interestingly with this year’s captaincy Dhoni also became the first uncapped player to lead an IPL team. So far Dhoni has captained 226 matches in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings (212) and Rising Pune Supergiants (14). He has played 10 IPL finals for CSK as captain and under his captaincy CSK have won five IPL titles.

With CSK not having a good run of the IPL 2025 thus far, CSK fans hope for a comeback under the able leadership of MS Dhoni. Chennai have won only one out of five matches they have played so far this season.
