Noman Ali Scripts History with Test Hat-Trick Against West Indies

Noman Ali etched his name in cricketing history on Saturday in Multan. The 38-year-old became the first Pakistani spinner to claim a hat-trick in Test cricket during the opening session of the second Test against the West Indies. His magical spell left the visitors reeling at 44 for 7 before lunch on Day 1.

Pakistan had never seen a spinner achieve this feat in Tests since their debut in 1952. Noman’s historic hat-trick came in the 12th over of the innings. He dismissed Justin Greaves, Tevin Imlach, and Kevin Sinclair on consecutive deliveries.

A Masterclass in Spin Bowling

Noman was introduced as the first-change bowler. He first removed West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite in his second over.

For his hat-trick, Noman dismissed Greaves with a sharp turner that was caught in the slips. Imlach followed, trapped leg-before while attempting a sweep. Sinclair, the final victim, edged a flighted delivery to gully, where Babar Azam took a sharp low catch.

Joining an Elite Club

Noman’s hat-trick makes him the sixth Pakistani bowler to achieve the milestone in Test cricket. He joins legends like Wasim Akram (who achieved the feat twice), Abdul Razzaq, Mohammad Shami, and Naseem Shah.

This achievement also places Noman as the second-oldest player in Test cricket history to take a hat-trick. He narrowly missed Rangana Herath’s record by just 29 days.

A Spin-Dominated First Day

The Multan pitch, prepared as a spin-friendly track, proved a nightmare for the West Indies batters. Pakistan’s spinners dominated the morning session, with Sajid Khan and Abrar Ahmed also chipping in with crucial wickets.

Noman finished the session with figures of 4 for 6, while debutant pacer Kashif Ali and Sajid Khan added to the carnage. West Indies’ decision to bat first after winning the toss spectacularly backfired.

Since his return to the Pakistan Test squad last October, Noman has been in stellar form. In just four matches since then, he has taken 30 wickets, reaffirming his value to the team. He was also named the ICC Player of the Month in October 2024 for his consistent performances.
