India captain Rohit Sharma has spoken out strongly in support of Jasprit Bumrah after the pacer’s fiery altercation with Australian opener Sam Konstas during the ongoing fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Known for his calm demeanour, Bumrah surprised everyone by losing his cool after an exchange with the 19-year-old Australian batter on Day 1.
During the lunch break on Day 2, Rohit, speaking to the host broadcasters, labelled Konstas’ behaviour as “non-sense” and backed his players for standing their ground.
“Our Boys Are Classy, But They Won’t Stay Quiet Forever”
Rohit made it clear that while the Indian team focuses on playing cricket with class, they won’t tolerate unnecessary provocations.
“Humare ladke jab tak shaant hain tab tak shaant hain. Agar aap ungli kar rahe ho, tab thodi na koi shaant baithega,” Rohit said. “Cricket khelo, yeh faaltu ki cheezein shobha nahi deti. (Our boys remain calm until poked. Play cricket, these unnecessary antics don’t look nice.)”
He further added, “Humare ladke classy hain. Hum zyada iss baat pe focus karte hain ki humara kaam kya hai. (Our boys are classy. We focus more on our tasks.)”
The Heated Exchange Between Bumrah and Konstas
The incident occurred on the penultimate ball of Day 1 when Usman Khawaja took his time to settle at the crease, disrupting Bumrah’s rhythm.
However, it wasn’t Khawaja’s delay that caused the tension. Konstas, standing at the non-striker’s end, made comments that irked Bumrah. The pacer, known for his composed personality, couldn’t hold back and engaged in a verbal spat.
On the very next ball, Bumrah dismissed Khawaja, forcing an edge to KL Rahul at second slip.
The celebration that followed was intense. Bumrah charged toward Konstas, letting his emotions show. Virat Kohli, who was stationed in the slip cordon, also ran toward Konstas, adding to the drama.
“Bumrah Had Every Right to React”
Rohit Sharma justified Bumrah’s reaction, stating that the team prioritizes professionalism but won’t stay silent if provoked.
“It was important to take a couple of wickets at that moment to keep Australia under pressure,” Rohit explained. “Our focus is on winning matches, but if someone crosses the line, our players will respond.”
Kohli’s Fiery Involvement
Known for his passionate approach to the game, Virat Kohli didn’t hold back either. After Bumrah’s dismissal of Khawaja, Kohli ran toward Konstas with a charged-up demeanour, indicating he wasn’t happy with the young batter’s conduct.
The sight of Kohli and Bumrah celebrating together, with Konstas in the middle, made for a gripping scene at the SCG.
Bumrah’s Historic Milestone
Amidst all the on-field drama, Bumrah quietly etched his name in the record books.
By dismissing Marnus Labuschagne for just 2 runs on Day 2, Bumrah took his 32nd wicket of the series, surpassing Bishan Singh Bedi’s record for the most wickets by an Indian bowler in a Test series away from home.
Bumrah’s leadership has been pivotal for India, especially in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma. His fiery spell on Day 1 set the tone for India’s fightback in the crucial Sydney Test.
