In a high-profile move that has the cricketing world abuzz, veteran off-spinner R. Ashwin has rejoined India Cements, paving the way for a potential return to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the upcoming IPL season. As part of this strategic transfer, Ashwin will take charge of the Chennai Super Kings High Performance Centre, which is set to be fully operational before the start of the next IPL season.
The transfer, finalized just ahead of the IPL 2024 big player auctions, signifies a strong possibility of Ashwin donning the yellow jersey of CSK once again. Given that this is a major auction, a direct trade between CSK and Rajasthan Royals, Ashwin’s current team, is not feasible. However, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan hinted at the franchise’s keen interest in bringing Ashwin back if the auction dynamics allow.
“That totally depends on the auction dynamics because we can’t have control over it. We have to wait and see if the opportunity presents itself,” Viswanathan stated. “First up, he will be taking charge of our High Performance Centre, and will handle the cricketing side of it including the programmes and everything. We have signed him back. He is now part of the CSK venture and will also play for the India Cements teams in the TNCA First-Division.”
A Homecoming in the Making
Ashwin’s return to India Cements has been anticipated for the past couple of years. N. Srinivasan, the owner of India Cements, has been vocal about Ashwin’s significant role in the future of CSK. During an event celebrating Ashwin’s 100th Test and 500 Test wickets milestone, Srinivasan praised the cricketer and hinted at his future contributions to the franchise.
“You have a big role to play going forward,” Srinivasan remarked, foreshadowing Ashwin’s re-entry into the CSK fold.
High Performance Centre: A New Era
The Chennai Super Kings High Performance Centre, located on the outskirts of Chennai, will be a pivotal facility for the franchise. It is designed to be a year-round training hub for players from Chennai, Johannesburg, and Texas, where CSK has established cricket academies. Ashwin, with his vast experience and cricketing acumen, is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the centre’s operations and mentoring young talents.
“Growing the game and contributing to the cricketing fraternity is my primary focus,” Ashwin commented on his new role.

Ashwin’s association with CSK dates back to the early years of his IPL career. After making his mark in domestic cricket, Ashwin rose to prominence with CSK during the 2009 and 2010 seasons. After leaving India Cements in 2016 to join their rivals Chemplast, Ashwin later moved to Take Solutions, owners of the Dindigul Dragons, a Tamil Nadu Premier League franchise.
