Robin Uthappa Warns CSK: MS Dhoni Alone Can’t Fix the Team, Squad Gaps Must Be Addressed

In what has become a crucial turning point for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025, MS Dhoni has returned as captain following Ruturaj Gaikwad’s unfortunate injury. While fans are excited to see the legendary leader back at the helm, former India cricketer Robin Uthappa believes that Dhoni’s leadership alone may not be enough to save CSK’s faltering campaign.

Speaking on JioCinema after the recent Delhi Capitals vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru clash, Robin Uthappa voiced concerns over CSK’s current standing and lack of depth in the squad.

“I don’t think him being captain is going to automatically turn the tide for CSK,” Uthappa stated. “There are a lot of gaps in that side. How do you cover for a solid batter like Rutu, who seemed like the only one in form?”

CSK’s Worrying Form in IPL 2025

The five-time champions are currently languishing at ninth place in the IPL 2025 points table, with just two points from five games. After suffering four consecutive defeats, their upcoming fixture against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai is a must-win.

With Ruturaj Gaikwad ruled out due to a hairline elbow fracture, Robin Uthappa insists that the management must act swiftly to find a stable batting order.

“You have Devon Conway, who showed some form in the previous match against Punjab Kings — he scored 69* before getting retired out. Rachin Ravindra has been patchy since the IPL began. Rahul Tripathi, in my view, needs to slot in at No.3,” Uthappa added.

Time for Tactical Shifts at CSK

Robin also suggested Sam Curran might be an option to fill the void in the XI, but warned that the road ahead will not be easy.

“There are so many moving pieces in this team. It’s not just about the captaincy — CSK need to strategically fill those gaps and build some momentum,” he concluded.

What’s Next for CSK?

CSK will look to bounce back against KKR on Friday, with the return of MS Dhoni as captain hoping to inject some much-needed energy into the side. However, as Robin Uthappa points out, the solutions go beyond just leadership. Squad balance, form, and strategic flexibility will all play a role if CSK hope to keep their playoff hopes alive.
