India’s captain Rohit Sharma chimed in on the discussion surrounding Cameron Green’s contentious catch that led to the dismissal of Shubman Gill in the World Test Championship final, claiming that the third umpire ought to have seen more replays before making his or her call.
When Shubman Gill edged a Scott Boland delivery to gully on Day 4, he was batting on 18, and Green dove to his left to make a spectacular catch. However, after numerous replays of the incident, there remained questions over whether the capture was legal. Finally siding with the fielding team, TV umpire Richard Kettleborough was heard saying, “fingers underneath the ball.”
Both Gill and his batting partner Rohit appeared to be upset about the choice; Gill even posted a photo to social media to express his feelings. After India lost by 209 runs on Sunday (June 11), Rohit addressed the media and expressed his disappointment with how swiftly the decision was made.
Rohit Sharma said
“The third umpire should have seen a little more replays, a little more of, you know, how the catch has been held. I think it was three or four times he saw, and he was convinced with it. It’s not about whether it was given out or not out, you need to have a proper and clear information about anything.
“It’s just not about the catch, it can be about anything. That was, that is something that I was a little disappointed with – the decision was made quite quickly. When a catch like that has been taken, you need to be more than 100% sure because it’s a final and we were at that important stage of the game as well. So that was to me a little disappointing,” he said.
The restricted camera angles the third umpire had at his disposal also dissatisfied the Indian captain.
“More camera angles should have been shown. There were only one or two camera angles that were shown. We’ve got more angles in IPL. We’ve got 10 different angles in IPL. I don’t know why in a world event like this, there was no ultra motion that was seen or any kind of zoomed image was seen. That is what I was a little disappointed with.”
