It seems Rohit Sharma could be preparing to say goodbye to Test cricket. According to a Times of India report, the Indian captain is expected to announce his retirement after the ongoing series against Australia.
Word is, the BCCI and selectors are already in the loop, and it doesn’t seem like Rohit is having second thoughts. While the exact timing of the announcement isn’t clear, it’s expected to come after the final Test in Sydney.
That said, there’s a slim chance he could stick around for one last hurrah if India makes it to the World Test Championship (WTC) Final.
A Tough Run for the Skipper
The ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy has been a rather disappointing run for the Indian skipper. In six innings so far, he’s managed just 31 runs. To put that in perspective, Jasprit Bumrah has taken 30 wickets in the same series. Yeah, it’s been that kind of stretch.
After India’s heavy loss in the fourth Test at Melbourne, Rohit opened up about how things have been weighing on him. “A lot of the things I’m trying to do aren’t falling into place,” he said. “It’s disappointing, no doubt. Mentally, it’s disturbing.”
As a Captain, It’s Been a Mixed Bag
Rohit also spoke about his leadership struggles, admitting that the results haven’t been what he hoped for. “Few results haven’t gone our way. As a captain, that is disappointing,” he said.
But more than the team’s issues, it’s his personal form that seems to be bothering him the most. “If you come here with the aim to succeed and things don’t fall into place, it’s a big disappointment,” he added.
It’s clear Rohit is taking this personally, as any passionate player would.
What’s Next for Rohit and Team India?
All eyes now are on Sydney. For Rohit, this could be his last Test match, and he’ll want to go out on a high. It might not be the farewell Rohit Sharma dreamed of, but he’ll undoubtedly want to sign off with one last impactful performance.
For India, the stakes couldn’t be higher. They need a win to keep their faint hopes of reaching the World Test Championship Final alive. If they fall short, this series will go down as one of missed opportunities and hard-learned lessons.
