Peshawar Zalmi have been handed a timely boost ahead of the 2025 Pakistan Super League, with dynamic left-handed opener Saim Ayub returning to full fitness. Ayub had been sidelined for over three months following an ankle injury sustained during Pakistan’s tour of South Africa earlier this year.
The incident occurred on January 3, during the first day of the second Test in Cape Town. Ayub sprinted toward the third man boundary to back up a relay throw from Aamer Jamal, but lost his balance near the rope and twisted his right ankle awkwardly.
He immediately fell to the ground in visible pain and had to be stretchered off after receiving lengthy treatment from the physio. The seriousness of the injury was evident as Ayub was later seen on crutches in the medical area.
Initially, the Pakistan Cricket Board estimated a six-week recovery period, offering some hope for Ayub’s participation in the Champions Trophy. However, setbacks in rehab meant that timeline kept extending. Despite hopes of returning during Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand, Ayub missed the entire series, and was eventually ruled out of the Champions Trophy as well.
Ayub’s return comes at an ideal time for Peshawar Zalmi, who will open their PSL 2025 campaign against Quetta Gladiators on Saturday. The 22-year-old has been one of the most consistent batters for Zalmi in recent seasons, finishing as the franchise’s top run-scorer in 2024 and ranking fifth overall in the league. He was also among the top ten batters in the 2023 edition.
A fluent stroke-maker known for his aggressive starts and innovative shot selection, Ayub’s presence adds significant depth to Zalmi’s top order. With the likes of Babar Azam already in the squad, Ayub’s return is expected to strengthen their batting strategy and provide a settled opening combination.
Having overcome a challenging and emotionally draining rehab process, Ayub is now fully fit and available for selection from the very first match. His comeback will be closely watched by fans and selectors alike, as Pakistan also begin shaping their plans for upcoming international assignments later this year.
With Ayub back in the mix, Zalmi will be looking to start their PSL 2025 campaign on a high and make a strong push for the playoffs. For Ayub, it marks a new chapter—one that begins with redemption and the hunger to reclaim his spot as one of Pakistan‘s brightest batting stars.
