Shardul Thakur, the star Indian pacer, etched his name in history on Thursday, January 30, by claiming a hat-trick for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 Elite Group A match against Meghalaya. The match is being played at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy in BKC, Mumbai.

The 33-year-old speedster struck thrice in the second over of his spell. With this feat, he became only the fifth Mumbai bowler to claim a hat-trick in Ranji Trophy history. He follows the footsteps of Jehangir Khot (1943-44), Umesh Kulkarni (1963-64), A.M. Ismail (1973-74), and Royston Dias (2023-24).

A Hat-Trick to Remember

Shardul opened his account by dismissing Nishanta Chakraborty on the fourth ball of his first over. He then struck twice in his second over, removing Balchander Anirudh and Sumit Kumar off consecutive deliveries. Both batters fell for golden ducks.

The hat-trick was completed when Thakur shattered Jaskirat Singh’s stumps on the third ball of the over. Jaskirat, too, was dismissed for a golden duck. Thakur’s spell was a masterclass in precision and aggression.

Mumbai’s Dominance Continues

Thakur was not the only bowler making an impact. His new-ball partner, Mohit Avasthi, also struck twice early. Avasthi dismissed Kishan Lyngdoh for a four-ball duck, caught by Akash Anand. He then clean-bowled Arpit Subash Bhatewara, further deepening Meghalaya’s troubles.

Thakur’s Red-Hot Form

Shardul has been in scintillating form recently. In Mumbai’s previous Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir, he top-scored in both innings. He smashed 51 runs in the first innings and followed it up with a brilliant 119 in the second.

Despite his efforts, Mumbai suffered a shocking defeat. However, Thakur’s performances have been a silver lining for the team.

A Strong Case for National Recall

Dropped from India’s Test squad, Thakur is making a strong case for a comeback. His all-round performances in the Ranji Trophy have been exceptional. Known for his contributions in overseas Tests, Thakur could be in contention for India’s upcoming Test series against England.

Shardul has played 11 Tests for India. The right arm pacer has 31 Test Wickets to his name. On top of that, he has also scored 331 runs at an average close to 20.

List of Mumbai’s Hat-Trick Heroes

Shardul joins an elite list of Mumbai bowlers who have taken hat-tricks in the Ranji Trophy:
