Abhishek Sharma destroyed the bowling attack of the Punjab Kings with his destructive hitting. The young opener slammed 10 sixes in the inning and scored at a strike rate of 256.36. Along with his opening partner Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma turned the second-highest run chase in the history of IPL into a joke. They achieved the target with 9 balls to spare.
Shreyas Iyer, the PBKS captain, complimented the innings played by Abhishek Sharma. In the post-match conversation, he talked about how he could not believe the match ended with almost 2 overs to spare. Talking about Abhishek’s innings, he said that the batter “played an exceptional knock, which was out of this world”.
“I think it was a fantastic total to be honest. Still making me laugh that they (SRH) chased it with 2 overs to spare. We could have taken a few catches, but he (Abhishek) was lucky. He was exceptional. In a nutshell we didn’t bowl to our expectations, we have to go to the drawing board and make amends. The opening partnership (between Abhishek and Head) was phenomenal, they didn’t give us too many opportunities to capitalize. The over rotation could have been better from our side. Ferguson can give you wickets, but that (injuries) happens, it’s a part and parcel of the game. These are the learnings for us going forward. The other bowlers could have done the same though. Myself and Wadhera thought 230 was a good total, but I think the dew made it harder for us (during the second innings.) The way they (SRH openers) batted was out of the world, it (Abhishek’s knock) was one of the best knock I have seen,” Shreyas Iyer said.
On the back of Abhishek Sharma’s knock, SRH were able to chase down a massive target of 246 with ease. Abhishek scored 141 runs in 55 balls. For comparison, Head, Klassen and Ishan combined scored 96 off 57. Such was the scale of Abhishek’s destruction that the other SRH batters don’t look very aggressive in comparison.
SRH won the match by 8 wickets and 9 balls to spare. It was the second-highest target successfully changed in the IPL, just behind the 263 that PBKS chased against KKR last year.
