Shreyas Iyer opened up about a deeply emotional moment during India’s triumphant Champions Trophy 2025 campaign. He revealed in an interview for the ‘Kandid with Kings’ show. Iyer revealed that he broke down in tears after a rough first training session in Dubai ahead of India’s opener against Bangladesh.

Emotional Start to a Triumphant Campaign

Despite arriving with confidence after a successful ODI series against England—where he scored 181 runs in three games including two fifties—Iyer found himself struggling in the nets. The conditions in Dubai posed a new challenge, and his inability to adapt quickly left him visibly frustrated.

“The last time I cried was during the Champions Trophy—at the first practice session. I was so angry with myself that I started crying. I don’t cry easily, so it was a shock,” Iyer said during the interview.

He added that he expected to continue his good form but couldn’t find his rhythm on the unfamiliar surface. When he wasn’t allowed a second session that day, the disappointment hit him harder.

“I thought I would carry the same flow with me, but the wickets were different, and adapting on the first day itself was an arduous task. I wanted to go again and practise a little extra—but I didn’t get the chance. That made me angry.”

From Frustration to Redemption

Iyer’s campaign, however, took a sharp turn. He scored 15 in the opening match against Bangladesh in a modest chase. But he bounced back with half-centuries in back-to-back games against New Zealand and Pakistan in the group stage. He then made significant contributions in the knockout stages, scoring 45 in the semi-final against Australia and 48 in the final—finishing as India’s top scorer in the tournament.

India went on to win the Champions Trophy, and Iyer’s mental strength stood out as he turned an emotional low into a springboard for success.

Strong Return to IPL 2025

Carrying his Champions Trophy form into IPL 2025, Iyer began the season with a powerful 97 against Gujarat Titans and followed it up with a fluent 52 against Lucknow Super Giants.

However, Jofra Archer briefly interrupted his flow by dismissing him for 10 runs in Punjab Kings’ opening defeat to Rajasthan Royals.

Even so, Iyer’s aggression and form with the bat signal that he’s in a determined phase of his career—hungry for runs, leadership success, and personal growth.

As the IPL 2025 season progresses, Shreyas Iyer’s story stands out as a reminder of the emotional and mental battles players fight behind the scenes—and how resilience can shape a champion.
