Playing against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Rajasthan Royals chose to bowl first. Gun fast bowler Jofra Archer was seen at his best as he dismissed the GT captain with a peach.
Batting against an in-form Jofra Archer is a nightmare for any batter in the world. The thunderbolts from the England fast bowler prove to be unplayable sometimes. His latest victim was the GT captain Shubman Gill. On the first ball of his second over, Jofra bowled a fuller delivery to Gill. The ball swung in and took the off-stump with it. The batter was clean bowled. Gill tried to play an expansive drive on the off-side. However, he couldn’t connect and lost his wicket.
Shubman Gill is deemed to be one of the best batters of the coming generation. The youngster has already made a mark for himself and is a regular feature for the national side. His performance has also improved over the years. However, Gill has often been guilty of not using his footwork early on in the innings. This creates issues as the batter gets stuck in the crease.
This was the case today. As Archer bowled a fuller in-swing ball, Gill couldn’t use his footwork and tried to play the ball with his hands alone. The 147km/h snorter was just too good for the Indian batter to control. He left a huge gap between the bat and the pad as the ball passed through it. Gill was bowled for 2 off 3 balls.
Gill was criticised for the flaw in his technique by commentators Ravi Shastri and Michael Clarke. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri said, “Yawning gap between bat and pad. What a sight for the bowler, not so much for Gill.”
Former Australia captain Michael Clarke wasn’t late to remark, “You always expect pace and swing from Archer. Gill left a huge gap between his bat and pad.”
Despite the early wicket of Shubman Gill, GT did well to recover. Opener Sai Sudarshan played a gem of an inning and scored 82. He was well supported by Jos Buttler and Shahrukh Khan. GT posted a total of 217/6. Rajasthan Royals are trying to chase the target now.
