As MS Dhoni returns to lead Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025, a video of Sourav Ganguly backing Dhoni’s captaincy comeback — even before it was officially announced — has taken social media by storm. The former India captain had confidently stated that Dhoni must lead CSK if he’s playing, calling him a “different beast” as captain.
In the viral clip, Sourav Ganguly said:
“If MS Dhoni has to play for CSK, he must be captain of CSK. Because MS Dhoni, the captain, is a different beast.”
This statement came just before CSK confirmed that Ruturaj Gaikwad would be ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to a hairline elbow fracture, paving the way for Dhoni’s return as skipper.
Gaikwad’s injury occurred during CSK’s game against Rajasthan Royals, where he scored 63 despite being in visible discomfort. After continued pain and subsequent medical evaluations, the franchise confirmed his unavailability for the rest of IPL 2025, making Dhoni’s comeback as captain official.
While acknowledging Dhoni’s age, Ganguly lauded the veteran’s ability to still impact games:
“MS Dhoni can still get sixes. He’s 43, and obviously not the same as in 2005. But he still has the power to clear the boundary.”
The statement reflects the faith Ganguly — and millions of fans — still have in Dhoni’s finishing prowess, even in the twilight of his career.
Chennai Super Kings face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) tonight at Chepauk, with just one win in five games so far this season. Dhoni’s return to captaincy comes at a crucial time as CSK sit ninth on the IPL 2025 points table, desperately needing a turnaround.
This will be Dhoni’s first match as captain since guiding CSK to their fifth IPL title in 2023, and the franchise will hope history repeats itself as they aim to get their campaign back on track.
