South Africa’s bowling depth has taken another blow. Gerald Coetzee, tipped to replace Anrich Nortje in the Champions Trophy squad, is now sidelined with a hamstring issue. This injury, coupled with his limited recent game time, has put his participation in doubt.
Coetzee, who recently returned from a groin injury, was left out of the Joburg Super Kings XI against Pretoria Capitals in the SA20. His absence raised questions as he had been expected to feature, especially on a pace-friendly track. Sources close to the team confirmed that Coetzee’s hamstring injury is being closely monitored.
He played his last SA20 game against Durban’s Super Giants, marking his first match since the Sri Lanka Test in Durban. In that Test, he delivered a standout performance, taking 4 for 85, but re-injured himself. His return has been sporadic, with fitness setbacks preventing consistent participation.
Coetzee’s absence creates a selection headache for Rob Walter, South Africa’s white-ball coach and chief selector. With Nortje already out due to a back problem, South Africa’s pace attack is running thin. Walter had previously hinted at Coetzee’s inclusion for the Champions Trophy but may now need to look elsewhere.
Options include the young Kwena Maphaka, known for his raw pace, or Corbin Bosch, South Africa’s most recent ODI cap. Death-bowling specialist Ottneil Baartman could also be considered. However, injury concerns have affected nearly every other pacer in contention.
South Africa’s bowlers have had a tough season. Eight seamers have been sidelined with injuries, including Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, and Wiaan Mulder. Among them, Rabada and Jansen have made comebacks. However, others like Nandre Burger (stress fracture) and Lizaad Williams (knee surgery) remain out. Daryn Dupavillon, another promising pacer, is also unavailable due to a hamstring injury.
Coetzee’s immediate focus will be on recovery. His fitness will determine whether he can make the trip to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.
