Sanju Samson’s Champions Trophy Selection in Doubt Amid BCCI Investigation

Sanju Samson’s hopes of making India’s Champions Trophy squad are hanging by a thread. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly investigating his decision to skip the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This development comes as the squad selection draws near, and the competition for places intensifies.

BCCI’s Mandatory Domestic Cricket Rule

The BCCI recently made it mandatory for players to participate in domestic tournaments to be considered for national selection. According to reports, top officials and selectors are unhappy with Samson’s absence from Kerala’s campaign in the premier 50-over competition. The Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) had earlier stated that Samson was unavailable for the preparatory camp ahead of the tournament.

A source quoted in The Times of India said, “The selectors and the board have been very clear about the importance of domestic cricket. Even players like Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer faced consequences for missing matches without proper permission. Samson’s case is no different.”

The same source also hinted at concerns about Samson’s activities during his time away. “All we know is that he spends a lot of time in Dubai. The board wants proper reasoning for his absence. Otherwise, it’ll be hard to consider him for the Champions Trophy,” the source added.

Selector Expectations

Selectors reportedly want Samson to provide valid reasons for skipping the tournament. “If there’s an issue between the player and the state association, it needs to be resolved. He played in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, so why not the Vijay Hazare Trophy? These things matter when you’re picking the squad,” said the source.

Samson has had a rocky relationship with the KCA in the past. However, such disputes can’t keep him out of domestic cricket if he aspires to don the national jersey.

The competition for wicketkeeper slots in the Champions Trophy squad is fierce. KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and young Dhruv Jurel are also in contention. Samson, known for his clean hitting and composure, will need more than his reputation to secure a spot.

For now, Samson is part of India’s T20I squad for the series against England. The series is poised to start January 22 in Kolkata.
