Sunil Gavaskar’s Straight Talk: Tough Questions for Indian Selectors on Kohli and Rohit’s Future within Team India

India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign has been far from ideal. They’re currently trailing 1-2 in the series with the chances of WTC Final qualification looking very slim. Following the defeat at MCG, India’s legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar has slammed senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He has openly questioned their future with the Indian Team.

A Disappointing Down Under Show

Both Kohli and Rohit entered the series with sky-high expectations. Yet, neither managed to step up, leaving fans and selectors alike disheartened. Rohit’s leadership and Kohli’s batting, cornerstones of the team, have come under fire. Gavaskar’s assessment was blunt and unvarnished.

Speaking about Kohli’s struggles, Gavaskar pointed to a recurring technical flaw. “The foot isn’t going towards the ball. It’s going straight down the pitch,” he explained in an interview with India Today. “When that happens, you’re forced to reach for deliveries outside off, increasing the risk of errors.”

This observation hits at the heart of Kohli’s repeated dismissals in the series. Despite trying very hard, Kohli has not been able to adapt to this issue.

Selectors in the Spotlight

Gavaskar didn’t stop at technical critiques. He also turned the spotlight onto India’s selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, urging them to make tough calls about the team’s senior players.

“The contributions from the top order have been below expectations,” Gavaskar said. “If the top order doesn’t perform, the lower order can’t be blamed for the team’s failures.”

Rohit, already facing whispers of retirement, finds himself in a particularly precarious position. Sunil Gavaskar has clearly stated that seniors should not be guaranteed a spot in the Indian Team based only on their reputation.

A Call for Accountability

India’s struggles in Australia, Gavaskar believes, stem largely from the underperformance of its experienced batters. “The top order hasn’t done its job. That’s why India finds itself in this situation,” he stated.

He also emphasized the responsibility senior players carry during crucial phases. “All they had to do was bat through the day and take the fight to Sydney,” Gavaskar remarked.
